This is a representative selection of cartes de visite, or visiting cards, by the Parisian photographer André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri (French, 1819–1889). All (with the exception of the one) are in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. In 1854, Disdéri patented this type of small photograph, along with a method for making eight separate negatives on a single plate, which greatly reduced production costs. Usually an albumen print measuring a little more than two by three inches, individual “cartes” were mounted on thick card stock so that they could be traded with friends and visitors. “Cartomania” was so intense that it led to the publication and eager collection of cartes of prominent people (especially actresses), which in turn gave consumers information on contemporary fashion and how to wear it.
All cartes de visite are albumen silver prints from glass negatives.
