Checklist of the Exhibition
Works are listed in chronological order and, within each year, in alphabetical order by artist’s last name. Works with no known artist or maker appear after those by named artists, alphabetically by title.
French titles are given where they differ substantially from the English.
Significant early exhibitions are given where applicable; they include exhibitions that occurred during an artist’s lifetime and major posthumous exhibitions, such as memorial exhibitions mounted shortly after an artist’s death.
In addition to the cartes de visite and fashion plates shown in the body of the catalogue (listed individually below), a broader selection of both, as well as of department store catalogues, from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art was shown in New York and Chicago. For a number of examples, see Appendix I and Appendix II.
This checklist has been revised to reflect changes made to the exhibition since the first printing of the catalogue.
