Conditions at the Villa, and artistic and intellectual perceptions of it, changed greatly in the nineteenth century. Many internal property barriers were removed in the early 1870s, when the government of the new kingdom of Italy purchased half the site — four hundred years after Pius II and Biondi had identified it.
