Pairs or multiple-image works are presented in the Japanese sequence, reading from right to left.
Cyclical or reign dates inscribed on works of art and in translated texts have been converted to the Gregorian calendar year. Numbered months refer to the lunar calendar. For example, Meiwa kōshin aki shichigatsu is converted to “autumn, seventh month, 1764.” All dates obtained from the works of art are preceded in the captions by the words “dated to”; all other dates are given as the year alone.
Measurements are given in inches and centimeters, with height preceding width. For hanging scrolls, measurements are of the image. For other types of objects, measurements are of the entire object (e.g., screen) unless otherwise indicated.
Translations of the poems in Chinese are by Jonathan Chaves. Translations of the poems in Japanese are by Hans Thomsen unless otherwise noted. The initial reading of Gyokuran’s Japanese poems was done by Unno Keisuke.
Numbers preceded by “ss” (e.g., SS45) refer to numbers assigned in the catalogue of Taiga’s collected works: Tanaka Ichimatsu et al., Ike Taiga sakuhin shū (Ike Taiga’s Collected Works), ed. Kurimoto Kazuo (Tokyo: Chūō Kōron, 1960). The Ike[-no] Taiga gafu is the original five-volume compilation of Taiga’s works, done in 1957–59. The compilers/editorial committee were Kosugi Hōan, Tanaka Ichimatsu, and Yamanaka Rankei, with Suzuki Susumu, Matsushita Hidemarō, and Yoshizawa Chū. In 1970 the five volumes were reissued as a two-volume compact set, the sakuhin shū, by the same group, Chūō Kōron was the publisher for both.
Japanese names are given surname first unless the author prefers Western name order. Artists and writers are referred to by their most commonly used sobriquet.
Ages are calculated according to Western reckoning (e.g., Taiga was five years old in 1728, not six as in Japanese reckoning).
