KARL SCHNAASE had attended Hegel’s lectures in the early 1820s in Berlin as a student. Unable to afford the life of a private scholar, he became a lawyer. But throughout his life he wrote on the visual arts, his most extensive work being the eight volume Geschichte der bildenden Künste, of which five volumes are devoted to the art of the Middle Ages.
