Indonesia, a country comprised of more than seventeen thousand islands, is located north of Australia and south of Malaysia. A crossroads of trade, these islands had contact with merchants from China, India, Southeast Asia, Arabic lands, and, finally, from Europe. Many islands have developed individual artistic styles that reflect local and foreign influences.
