Vasari concludes the preface by announcing, “Now the time has come for the life of Giovanni Cimabue; who, as was said, gave the beginning to the new way of painting.” This proclamation promises much to the reader. We might expect an account of how invasive mobility and styles will be vanquished, how the Tuscan air will restore the visual arts to their former glory.
