In 1891 Tom Roberts was standing on the land of the Bangerang people of the Yorta Yorta Nation as he drew in pencil the preliminary outline of a horse and stockrider trying to slow the desperate stampede of sheep toward water. “Bangerang” has various spellings in English, and this is the version used by the Yorta Yorta National Aboriginal Corporation. The Bangerang people occupied lands in Victoria and New South Wales that included the region known as Corowa since European settlement. Roberts was then a guest of the settler-colonist Henry Hay at Collendina Station in the Riverina district of New South Wales.
