Description: Watercolors by Winslow Homer: The Color of Light
Unlike the similar Boy and Horse Plowing (figure b) revealed that the design for the man, horse, and plow were transferred to the sheet using carbon paper (see figure a). In the late nineteenth century, carbon paper was made from tissue paper that was coated with carbon pigment such as lamp black in a gum, protein, or wax binder that released when pressure was applied.
