A NOTE ON USAGE
For the sake of accuracy, I have used ellipses at the beginning and end of Duchamp’s statements to indicate omitted words, both spoken and written, although this practice is not used for other quoted matter. Unspaced ellipses within a Duchamp note reflect his use of a line of dots. Italics indicate Duchamp’s underlining of selected words for emphasis; italics have not been used, however, in quotations of entire phrases or sentences that are underlined in the original note. Unless otherwise noted, citations from Arturo Schwarz, The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp, are taken from the 2d rev. ed. (1970).
