Note to the Reader and The Kano Lineage
Names of Japanese and Chinese historical figures are given in traditional order (surname first); names of contemporary figures, including authors of this volume, are given in Western order (surname last). Life or reign dates of historical figures are provided when known. Cyclical or reign dates inscribed on works of art and in translated texts have been converted to the Gregorian calendar year. Numbered months refer to the lunar calendar; the beginning of the first month of the lunar calendar falls between late January and mid-February of the Gregorian calendar, depending on the particular year. Pairs or multiple-image works are presented in the Japanese sequence, reading from right to left. Measurements are given in inches and centimeters, with height preceding width. For hanging scrolls and albums, measurements for the image itself are provided; for other types of objects, the dimensions of the entire object are given, unless otherwise noted. In Appendix 2 (Compendium of Seals), dimensions are provided when known. The Modified Hepburn system is used for the romanization of Japanese, and pinyin for Chinese.
