Description: Charon, O Charon heare a wretch opprest by Ramsey, Robert
Robert Ramsey’s “Charon, O Charon heare a wretch opprest” is here transcribed from the sole surviving complete source of the piece with the sections that appear in The Paston Treasure given below to enable comparison. The realism with which the open book is depicted in the painting results in some of the music being lost in the gutter or not visible because part of the page is turned away from the viewer. Here we see the whole piece that the painter is drawing upon, while at the same time witnessing how the fragments in the painting differ from the version previously known. Editorial amendments are kept to a minimum: the clefs are modernized, but mensuration signs, note values, beaming, barring, and spelling are all original (although textual contractions are realized tacitly and text indicated by iterum marks appears in italics). Thus no attempt is made to correct the minor inaccuracies in the Paston Treasure version.
