In the checklist entries, the order of dimensions is height, width, and depth or diameter. Some images and inscriptions are not reproduced, such as works from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Durand-Arias Collection, which are available online and in print. Translations, and in many cases also transcriptions, when not provided by the lender or found in published sources, were made by David Colmenares (Spanish), Shuki Ecker (Hebrew), Ana Estrades (Spanish and Italian), and Annika Fisher with Nina Gockerell (German/Bavarian dialect). Votive objects or ex-votos are a broad category of material artifacts produced with the intention of being offered as acts of faith. Common across historical periods, religions, and cultures, they are presented as tokens of gratitude for prayers answered, as well as the physical manifestation of hopes and anxieties. Agents of Faith explores votive offerings in the context of material culture, art history, and religious studies to better understand their history and present-day importance.
