The following style guidelines are observed throughout to facilitate use of the volume:
The original manuscript source could not be consulted in every case. In these instances, later published versions that were referenced may follow different editing rules. Whenever possible, the present location of the original is given.
All original spelling, capitalization, and punctuation is preserved without correction or indication, except in cases where it was deemed necessary to modernize language to facilitate legibility for today’s reader.
The insertion of footnotes was generally avoided, with a preference to instead supply in the headnotes essential references to individual sources.
Individual birth and death dates for the hundreds of people named in this volume are not included. Dates, but no other information, are given for artworks mentioned in the headnotes and captions.
Square brackets indicate editorial interpolations. All such insertions are from the volume editors except where noted.
Ellipses follow the Chicago Manual of Style three-dot method in which three dots stand equally for omitted words, sentences, or paragraphs. They are not used at the beginning of the first paragraph of the excerpt, regardless of whether the start of that paragraph or the beginning of its first sentence is omitted, nor do they appear after the last word of the excerpt, even if the end of the original is omitted.
