Notes on the Catalogue
Measurements are in centimeters, and most are rounded to the nearest tenth; weights for coins and seals are exact. We use Greek rather than Latin spelling for the Byzantine period, with the exception of some names, such as Constantine, which have become standard in English; in most cases the Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium has been the reference.
The reign dates for empresses are frequently those of their husbands, since precise dates for empresses’ reigns are often not known.
In the endnotes and bibliography, exhibition catalogues are cited by an abbreviated title and the date of publication; other catalogues are cited by author or editor and date.
